“I often get accused of being over competitive - I don't hide it nor will I ever deny it. My motivation has never been money, (I gave up a career in the wine trade to open a food business!) I am undoubtedly a self-confessed perfectionist when it comes to food. That means our coleslaw must be cut (just how I like it) by hand. It means that I am incredibly discerning when it comes to our produce suppliers. It also means that each and every lunch served by a member of my team must be one they would be proud to serve to their parents.
My ethos is simple and my objective is clear. Lunch will provide the best value food per pound in Colchester. If there is somewhere else achieving that, I have failed.
I don't want Lunch to appeal to a specific demographic and I don't aim for a particular target audience. Our regular customers range from 16-70 years of age, their professions vary and they are as likely to be to male as they are female. Good food does not discriminate and my goal is that our reputation ensures that everybody wants to pay Lunch a visit.
The menu on our website explains our diverse range of food but it cannot explain the desire behind it all. I love my town, it is not an easy place for a food business to succeed and yet we’ve been here since 2006. The greater the competition the harder I try!
I cannot write about Lunch without mentioning Tope my Shop Manager. He gave up a steady job to work for me and has been there through thick and thin. It is only now that we are both beginning to see the fruits of our labour and whilst I might be the creative one he is without a doubt the shop’s engine room.”
